Step Into My Sessions: Learning + Fun = A Great Session!

Great animations are FULL of mental state verbs!

After presenting at CSHA a while back, I kept busy with an in-person (!!!!) presentation for high school SLPs in a nearby school district. In preparation for that, I re-visited how great animations are for modeling mental state verbs (MSV) for our older students.

One of the fundamental ways to expose our students to MSV and jumpstart their learning is to play a great animation and “voice-over” or narrate what mental processes are happening. Just hearing our description, even with a relatively simple story line lets our students begin to understand this more complicated, but ever so important, vocabulary. Often when I present, I use this example:

A Cloudy Lesson is a terrific animation – but maybe not for high school students. I came up with a similar activity, but with an animation that older students will find more engaging. And they will still work on the importance of understanding mental process:

Feel free to try either of these activities, and please, let me know how it goes! Stay tuned over the next few weeks for more tips about MSV and animations. Haven’t downloaded my list of MSV to post in your office or hand out to teachers and parents? You can get the confetti-decorated pdf here!

Happy viewing and mental state exploring!

Best wishes,

Anna
